This kitchen is a sophisticated addition to a townhouse. The kitchen is part of the open plan main dining and living area of the house, and also provides access to the outdoor patio. This is a deceptively simple design to meet the challenge of making the kitchen feel as large as possible while optimising storage.
The kitchen cooking area is positioned within the existing chimney breast, to which extraction via a Westin extractor takes place. In the Silestone worksurface is an induction hob under which there are two built in ovens.
The existing alcoves on each side of the chimney breast are used for double doored counter top cabinets. As with the rest of the kitchen the doors appear pure shaker but have a subtle softening round on their frames to blend with the Victorian house. The two alcove cupboards have ample storage for appliances. Opening the bifold doors allows for a full worksurface of the Silestone Classic Calacatta enabling the full worksurface depth to be used, but the doors can quickly hide the untidiness of everyday life.
In the opposite wall to the cooking, storage around the sink has been carefully planned, with a tall integrated NEFF fridge freezer and below the sink an integrated dishwasher. The 1810 undermounted stainless steel sink with a Quooker Flex tap is made to look even more generous by the mirrored splashback between the full height units and open display and book shelf cabinetry. In all the display cabinetry, lighting was key to lift the interiors of cabinets both for display and for visual access to items stored.
A display larder cupboard was key to the clients wishes and is designed as a key feature with concave shelves allowing good access within and additional shelving on the doors themselves. The larder cupboard includes many personal Yorkshire references in the carvings on the oak drawers.
As the design conversation developed the central island took shape in terms of form and size to give more worksurface area and storage. The island contains wine storage, sorter recycling bins, display and cookbook shelving. The curved end of the island softens the view from the living area as do the mirrored plinths on the cabinetry giving a lightness of fee by reflecting the solid walnut floor.
