How to Choose the Perfect Dining Table for Your Home

A dining table is one of the hardest-working pieces of furniture in any home. It is where families gather for everyday meals, friends come together to celebrate, children complete homework and conversations continue long after dinner has finished.

Choosing the right dining table is about far more than appearance alone. The size, shape, materials and functionality all influence how comfortably the table fits into your home and how well it supports the way you live.

At Treske, we believe every dining table should be designed around the people who use it. Whether you are looking for a handcrafted dining table to become the centrepiece of your dining room or a bespoke solution for an unusual space, taking the time to consider your options will help you make a decision that you will enjoy for many years.

Start with the Right Size

One of the first considerations when choosing a dining table is ensuring it fits comfortably within the room.

When planning a dining table, it is important to consider not only the size of the table itself, but also the space around it. As a guide, we recommend allowing at least 90cm between the table and surrounding walls or furniture, with around 110cm providing a more comfortable clearance so people can move freely even when chairs are occupied. The amount of space allocated for each place setting is equally important. Around 60 to 80cm per person is suitable for everyday dining, slightly less for high days and holidays to accommodate a larger group, while closer to 100cm creates a more relaxed setting for longer meals and entertaining.

The design of the table also plays a part in seating comfort. Pedestal tables often provide greater flexibility because there are no corner legs to restrict where chairs can be positioned. During the design process, we also consider the height of the table, ensuring there is comfortable clearance beneath the tabletop, as well as the position of the legs so every seat remains practical and comfortable to use.

It is also worth thinking about how many people use the table on a daily basis, as well as how often you entertain. A table for four may be ideal for everyday family life, while larger households or those who regularly host guests may benefit from seating for six, eight or more.

Because every home is different, our dining tables can be designed to suit the available space precisely, rather than compromising with standard dimensions.

Which Table Shape Works Best?

The shape of your dining table has a significant impact on both the look and functionality of the room.

Rectangular tables, like our Westwood Table, remain one of the most popular choices because they work well in longer rooms and comfortably accommodate larger groups. Round tables, such as the Ayton Round Table, create a more intimate setting, encouraging conversation while making excellent use of smaller spaces. Square tables can work particularly well in square rooms, while oval designs, like the Bamburgh, offer many of the advantages of rectangular tables with softer lines that improve movement around the room.

The best option depends on the proportions of the room, the number of people using the table, and the overall style you wish to achieve.

Choosing the right wood is an integral part to our process

Choosing the Right Material

The material you choose will influence not only the appearance of your dining table but also its durability and how it performs in everyday use.

Solid timber remains one of the most popular choices because it combines natural character with exceptional longevity. Each piece of timber we use is hand selected, so it has its own unique grain and texture, giving every table an individual appearance that cannot be replicated by mass-produced alternatives.

At Treske, our furniture is handcrafted using carefully selected timbers, allowing each table to showcase the natural beauty of the wood while providing the strength needed for daily family life.

The finish is equally important. From lighter contemporary finishes that create an airy feel to richer tones that bring warmth and character, the right finish should complement both your interior and the way you use the space. We offer a wide range of finishes, from durable matt and gloss lacquers that provide excellent resistance to heat, water and UV exposure, to natural oils, coloured oils and waxes that enhance the character and feel of the timber. Each finish has its own practical benefits, so as part of the design process we will talk through the options with you, helping you choose the one that best suits your lifestyle, aesthetic preferences and maintenance expectations.

Should You Choose an Extending Dining Table?

For many households, flexibility is an important consideration.

An extending dining table provides the convenience of a compact table for everyday use while offering additional seating when friends or family visit. Extending tables are available in a variety of shapes, including round to rounded end, like the Rodam Nodi, and rectangular designs such as the Artisan Invito. This makes it an excellent solution for homes where space is at a premium but entertaining remains an important part of family life.

A well-designed extending table should operate smoothly and maintain its appearance whether fully extended or in its standard configuration. As part of a bespoke design process, extension mechanisms can be selected to suit both the table design and the practical requirements of the household.

Most extending dining tables are designed to extend either from one end or from the centre, depending on the style of the table, the leg configuration and the extension mechanism. In many designs, the extension leaves are neatly concealed within the table itself and are revealed only when required, unfolding smoothly using a butterfly mechanism as the table is extended.

Why Consider Buying a Custom Dining Table?

Every home has its own character, and every family uses its dining space differently.

While standard furniture can work well in some situations, custom dining tables offer a level of flexibility that allows every detail to be tailored to the room and the people who will use it.

The process begins with understanding your requirements. During the design process, we work closely with our clients to discuss size, proportions, timber choices, finishes, leg styles and any practical features that may improve everyday use. Sketches, drawings and material samples help bring each design to life before production begins. As part of the design process, we can produce seating plans to help visualise how chairs will fit around the table, ensuring there is ample room for table legs, comfortable seating positions, and enough space for chairs or armchairs to tuck neatly beneath the table when not in use.

This collaborative approach ensures the finished table feels considered, personal and perfectly suited to its surroundings.

Built to Last

A dining table is often one of the longest-lasting pieces of furniture in a home.

Rather than following short-term trends, a thoughtfully designed table should continue to look beautiful and perform well for decades. Quality craftsmanship, carefully selected materials and precise construction all contribute to furniture that can become part of family life for generations.

Many of our clients see a handcrafted dining table not simply as furniture, but as a long-term investment that continues to serve the home as lifestyles evolve. A well-made dining table is designed to stand the test of time. At Treske, it is not uncommon for tables we made decades ago to return for a new tabletop finish or to be resized, ensuring they continue to meet the changing needs of family life.

Choosing a Table That Reflects Your Home

The perfect dining table is one that balances practical needs with personal style.

By considering the size of the room, the number of people who will use it, the materials, the shape and whether additional flexibility is required, you can select a table that enhances both the appearance and functionality of your home.

For those looking for something truly individual, bespoke furniture provides the opportunity to create a table designed around your space, your lifestyle and your design preferences.

At Treske, we are here to help you talk through the options and create furniture that is tailored to the way you live. Whether you are looking for a statement centrepiece or a practical family table, our bespoke approach ensures your dining table is designed to provide lasting quality, everyday comfort and timeless appeal.
